3 Must-Read Faith Books for Spiritual Growth
I’m usually reading three books at any given time: the Bible (of course), a nonfiction faith book to help me grow spiritually, and a fiction book to stir my creativity.
This summer, I read a few faith books that were truly impactful. I found myself recommending them to friends, family, and now you.
This post is not sponsored, and I don’t receive any monetary compensation.
These are just books that moved me, challenged me, and helped me grow in my walk with God. I hope they encourage you, too.
Without further ado, here are the three books that deeply enriched my faith.
Book 1: How to Tell the Truth by Preston Perry
About the Author
Preston Perry is a poet, speaker, and Christian apologist known for his bold, relatable approach to sharing the gospel.
He and his wife, Jackie Hill Perry, co-host the podcast With the Perrys, where they discuss faith, culture, and relationships.
About the Book
In How to Tell the Truth, Preston shares his personal testimony of coming to faith in Chicago and the lessons he learned about evangelism, boldness, and love.
This isn’t just a book about apologetics—it’s about learning how to share the gospel with compassion, courage, and clarity.
✨ Key Takeaways
Impact on My Faith: This book rocked me. It made me reflect on the cultural or religious groups I often avoid engaging with out of fear or lack of knowledge. Preston reminded me that we are called to share the gospel with everyone, even when we feel unqualified.
Favorite Quote:
“Good deeds without the truth of the gospel will only make us philanthropists.”
(Referencing Romans 10:14—Mic drop.)Practical Application: I started journaling about boldness and how I could better share my faith. I also noted the fundamentals Preston shared and studied Scripture to anchor these truths.
How I Applied It: I’ve become more intentional in conversations, asking questions, and truly listening before sharing my faith.
Encouragement: If you feel unqualified or nervous about sharing the gospel, this book is for you. Preston offers a grace-filled blueprint for winning hearts, not just arguments.
Book 2: Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer
About the Author
John Mark Comer is a pastor, author, and teacher known for books like The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.
He’s passionate about helping people live like Jesus, not just believe in Him.
About the Book
This book explores what it meant in Jewish culture to follow a rabbi, and how we can reclaim that same level of intimacy with Jesus today.
Comer challenges us to not just "be a Christian," but to be a disciple, an apprentice of Jesus.
✨ Key Takeaways
Impact on My Faith: This book changed how I view my relationship with Jesus. It helped me move from daily quiet time to daily apprenticeship. I now walk with Jesus in the little moments, not just the big ones.
Favorite Quote:
“Eventually... your entire body and soul will anchor itself in God... Even in all the noise and chaos of the modern world... you can develop a mind that is rooted in God.”
Practical Application: I recommend reading this book with a notebook. Comer offers practical spiritual habits, and his Practicing the Way course is a great companion.
How I Applied It: I started asking Jesus daily to show me His way, not just His will. It’s reshaped how I move through my day.
Encouragement: If you feel lukewarm in your faith, this book is a wake-up call, in the best way. It shows you what it really means to follow Jesus with your whole life.
Book 3: The Bait of Satan (20th Anniversary Edition) by John Bevere
About the Author
John Bevere is a best-selling author and the co-founder of Messenger International. With a deep passion for truth, he writes and teaches boldly about freedom, identity, and spiritual growth. His family also hosts podcasts like At Home With the Beveres and The John Bevere Podcast.
About the Book
In The Bait of Satan, Bevere tackles the deadly trap of offense, a subtle but powerful tool the enemy uses to divide, discourage, and destroy. The updated edition includes a 30-day devotional to help you put these lessons into practice.
✨ Key Takeaways
Impact on My Faith: This book helped me realize how easy it is to fall into offense—and how dangerous it is when we don’t recognize it. I now regularly ask God to search my heart for hidden bitterness.
Favorite Quote:
“The soil of an offended heart is barren, poisoned by bitterness... We will be judged according to fruit, not gifting.”
Practical Application: The 30-day devotional is so helpful. It leads you step by step through the process of examining and releasing offense.
How I Applied It: I didn’t have major offenses at the time, but this book gave me tools to process past hurts and stay free from future ones.
Encouragement: Every Christian should read this book, whether or not you think offense is an issue. It’s a powerful heart-check and a practical path to freedom.
Strengthen Your Spiritual Walk
Each of these books impacted me in unique ways.
Whether it was learning to share my faith more boldly, walk more closely with Jesus, or forgive more deeply, I walked away from each one transformed.
You don’t have to read them all at once, but I do encourage you to read at least one.
Let the Holy Spirit speak to you through their pages. You may find the encouragement, challenge, or breakthrough you’ve been praying for.
Happy reading!
