Prayer for Courage This Back-to-School Season
I don’t know about you, but I’m always a mix of emotions when the back-to-school season rolls around. I look forward to crisp fall mornings and a fresh start, and I love making sure my kids have what they need. But I can also feel overwhelmed.
I get anxious wondering if I’ve covered every task before the morning rush of packing lunches, signing forms, and getting everyone out the door.
Then, beyond the busyness, comes a deeper weight. My thoughts shift from “Do we have everything?” to “Will my kids be safe? Will they be influenced in the wrong way? What if they’re bullied?”
The truth is, we can’t step into every classroom, every conversation, or every challenge they’ll face.
But we can send them covered in prayer.
Whether it’s their first day of kindergarten or their final year of high school, one thing is certain: we can’t go with them everywhere, but God can. He’s already gone before them, and He can give them everything they need to face the year with courage, grace, and truth.
Why Our Kids Need Courage and Wisdom
This year, I’ve felt led to pray not just for safety, but for strength. Not just for success, but for spiritual wisdom and boldness to walk in who God has called them to be.
We can’t afford to shrink back in our prayer life—when we do, our kids may shrink in their faith. Let’s pray bold, courageous prayers that help them stand strong in Christ.
Our kids are growing up in a world that tries to shape their beliefs before they even know what they believe. They’ll need courage to stand firm, not always in big, dramatic moments, but in quiet, everyday choices.
The same God who told Joshua, “Be strong and courageous,” tells us the same today.
Scriptures to Pray Over Your Kids
Here are a few verses to speak over your children as they begin this year.
Don’t just pray these over your kids—encourage them to learn and memorize them. When God’s Word is planted in their hearts, they can recall it anytime they need His strength, comfort, or guidance.
Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding… and he will make your paths straight.”
2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.”
A Back-to-School Prayer for Courage and Wisdom
Heavenly Father,
As my child steps into this new school year, go before them and surround them.
Fill their heart with courage when they feel nervous, and strengthen them to stand firm in truth when it’s easier to blend in. Give them discernment beyond their years and a heart for what is good, pure, and worth pursuing.
May they walk in kindness, humility, and quiet confidence—not because of who they are, but because of who You are in them.
When challenges come, help them not to fear. Remind them they are never alone, and that Your Spirit gives them power, love, and a sound mind.
Guide their steps, protect their peace, and help them shine in every hallway, classroom, and conversation.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Faith for an Abundant Year
You don’t have to have every answer or every situation figured out to be a faith-filled parent. You simply have to keep placing your child back into God’s hands—over and over again.
Remember the God you serve: big, awesome, and fully able to care for your children. He’s entrusted them to us, and our prayers help shape who they become in Him.
Keep this prayer somewhere you’ll see it—in your Bible, on the fridge, or as part of your morning routine. Let it guide you as you speak life over your child all year long.
Let’s not just pray for a safe year. Let’s pray for a Spirit-filled one.
